Making Greensburg, Kansas Greener

If you haven't caught wind of the rebuilding of Greensburg, KS - a rural community leveled by an EF5 tornado last year - you're missing out on one of the most exciting environmental developments to blow through our national consciousness.
If you think of people living on the Plains as a bunch of hicks, you'll probably be surprised to witness the most brilliant rural revitalization project ever undertaken in the Heartland of America.

Hi.. I found your blog in a random Google search... I just wanted to thank you for this post!
I am a 5th generation Greensburg resident, and I work for Greensburg GreenTown... I could not be more proud of my town!

Hey Anita!
I'm honored to have been contacted by someone working for Greensburg GreenTown. You should be proud be of your town--and so am I. I think what you're doing is bold and brilliant. Being from Missouri, I'm honored to call you my next door neighbor. Thanks for stopping by my blog. More important, thanks for all you're for American right there in Greensburg, KS.

It's so exciting that this tiny town can make such an impact.. Our greatest wish is to be an imfluence - if we can do it, anyone can!

Well, Anita my new friend, I appreciate your modesty but perhaps you are underestimating yourselves: I'm not sure that anyone could do what your town is doing. Most of America seems unable to take broad view, the Seven Generation view. Do you know what I mean? I'm just glad to see that being green is less politicized into a left wing versus right wing issue these days. It took a special group of people to tap into a special kind of energy flowing through their community--Greensburg, KS--to shoulder the burden of being role models for us all. Thank you so much for this dialog with me.

You're very welcome! Thank YOU for being so supportive... and I think it's the initial decision to DO IT that is the hard part...

It always is, isn't it? I think that doing the right thing is often hard right out of the gate. In my experience, once you commit to taking the high road, others become inspired and then throw you their support. I hope that you're finding that happening for you.

Question: Is it yet possible to come to Greensburg with nieces and nephews to show them what is taking place there? Or would more outsiders than you already have there (at least based on my knowledge from the Planet Green coverage) be getting in the way right now?

Oh no, we welcome people to come, and we love sharing whats going on! Right behind the Kwik Shop (middle of town, on the highway, can't miss it) is a small building which is our office - greensburggreentown.org. Stop in there M-F 10 am - 5 pm and find out all about what's going on in town... we're working on a visitor's map so you can find some of the green buildings and homes, and we have lots of information! (Or if it's a weekend, you could call me and I can come give you the tour!)
